In 2018, the COP24 Special Report on Climate Change and Health called climate change the greatest health challenge of the 21 century. The report was also a call to arms for the health community to mobilize and act on this public health emergency. It is time we took on this responsibility earnestly.
When we started this campaign in late October, we were dreading the worst for the bushfire season in Australia as all evidence was pointing to a horror start but hoping that predictions might not come to pass for this summer. Well, our worst fears have been realized and climate change impacts has become a lived reality for so many Australians.
As doctors we have a duty of care to protect health. We have spoken out against health hazards, such as smoking. Now we must stand together to demand that our leaders address the climate crisis.
The time to act is now. Please just don't sign but also share the petition. More importantly, please engage with your colleges, medical schools, hospitals and health services and ask that they declare a climate emergency. To date 8 colleges have declared a climate health emergency. As of 28/02/2020 these are RACP, ACEM, RACGP , ACRRM, ANZCA, RANZCP, TSANZ, CICM.
Collectively we need to act. Beyond national politics and international political accords such as the Paris Agreement, we need to frame our arguments clearly based on the science with a view to protecting health.
Sign the petition calling on the Federal Government to recognise climate change as a public health emergency and demand urgent action in accordance with the science:
